Funding for Development of Community Food Gardens

April 2010 – April 2011
The purpose of this initiative is to increase food security for all members of the Richmond community. The Richmond Food Security Society is offering small grants to advance urban agriculture on the community, with particular emphasis on community gardens. Grants of up to $500 can be used to install new community gardens or expand existing ones.

Water Act Modernization Workshops

The Water Act is the primary law in B.C for managing our water resources and has a key role in ensuring the sustainability of B.C.’s water resources.  To respond to new challenges that exist for managing our water including dealing with population growth and climate change, the government is looking at ways to modernize the Water Act.

The Ministry of Environment will be hosting regional multi-sector workshops during March and April 2010 at the following locations:

Nanaimo – March 5
Prince George – March 8

The Farmland Defence League and Gateway - Town Hall meeting in Langley

The Farmland Defence League and Gateway 40 Citizens Network invites farmland advocates and Gateway opponents from across the region to attend a Town Hall meeting in Langley being co-hosted by federal Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment, Mark Warawa, MP, Mary Polak, MLA and Langley City Mayor, Peter Fassbender to take issue with the Harper/Campbell governments' plans to destroy several hundred acres of Langley's best farmland for more highways.

Growing Food in the City

"Growing Food in the City" is offered in Burnaby (starting March 3), Victoria (starting March 3), and Duncan (starting March 3)

The course consists of 20 three-hour sessions - spanning the entire growing season. What an opportunity to develop your gardening skills under the mentorship of experienced organic food gardeners!

Here are some of the things you will learn - using essential organic gardening and permaculture techniques:
Create and maintain healthy soil, which in turn can grow nutritious food
Analyze and optimize the growing conditions in your garden

Complementing the movie nights on waste and, in an attempt to learn about the importance of organic waste recycling, we have organized a field-trip to the composting facility in Whistler, where on-site staff will be giving us a tour and share valuable facts with us. The bus leaves from the Adventure Centre at 1pm on Friday, January 22nd (details attached). Estimated return time is 4:30pm. Please let me know asap if you want a seat reserved.

Chicken and Egg Dance

This time around, a trio of non-profits bring an evening of good old-fashioned country fun to the city for the 9th Annual Chicken and Egg Dance held at the Capri Hall. The BC Association for Regenerative Agriculture, FarmFolk/CityFolk and Vancouver Farmers Markets join forces to raise money to further their work promoting and supporting local food production.

TRAIN THE TRAINER CANNING WORKSHOPS

Percy Schmeiser is a distinguished speaker, Canadian farmer and seed breeder and saver who has become famous for displaying courage and tenacity in legal battles with Monsanto. Percy has traveled the world campaigning for food safety, and for the right of farmers to save and reuse their seed. More recently Percy has spoken out against the Canadian Government's advocacy of "Terminator" seed technology. He will be speaking about GMO Pharmaceuticals, Food Safety, and Environmental Law

Starting August 2, a new market will launch in Gastown as a project of the City's Summer Spaces program. This market is a partnership between the Gastown Business Improvement Society and Vancouver Farmers Markets.

What Can I Plant Now?

The gardening season isn't over! There's still plenty to plant and harvest to enable your garden to produce year-round. Learn how to select varieties of vegetables that are winter hardy and time their planting so as to produce through the fall and winter. Simple season extension techniques such as raised beds, row cover, cloches, and cold frames will be discussed and demonstrated. Participants will be able to go home with a couple of winter vegetable seedlings for their own gardens.
