August action
The heat continues in full force, and the garden is either loving it, or struggling. Summer crops are here, with local Tomatoes, Cucumbers and Beans having been in the store these last couple of weeks. In my own garden the Corn is pollinating it's ears, and the Melon plants are starting to set. The Winter Squash is well on its way to maturity, with the Amber Cup's turing a deep orange and the Hubbard's are getting bigger every day. Blueberries are at their peak, and although the Raspberries are pretty much done, the Blackberries are going to be coming on strong.
July
Well it is officially summer now, and gardens are in transition again. Spring greens have made way for Summer's full growth as well as the start of Winter's harvest. Our local lettuce supply is waning but the summer fruits have started with local strawberries having made an appearance and multiple cherry varieties on the cooler's shelves. The wonderful supply of local potatoes has been consumed but early beets are still coming. Zucchini and summer squash in shades of yellow and green are a delight to look at and the smell of fresh garlic fills the store.
June is passing
This bit of rain we have received has been great in the garden! I am surprised though how dry my soil is even a bit below the surface though - even with cover cropping and mulching. Anyway, it seems that the lettuce glut is about over - which I hope does not mean that we start carrying lettuce from far away again. If you have lettuce, or space to plant lettuce that will be ready for mid July through September, let me know. I have been proud to see that for weeks now we have only had local lettuce on the shelves.
