June is passing
This bit of rain we have received has been great in the garden! I am surprised though how dry my soil is even a bit below the surface though - even with cover cropping and mulching. Anyway, it seems that the lettuce glut is about over - which I hope does not mean that we start carrying lettuce from far away again. If you have lettuce, or space to plant lettuce that will be ready for mid July through September, let me know. I have been proud to see that for weeks now we have only had local lettuce on the shelves. In other local produce news, the local zucchini and summer squash we are carrying are beautiful! The local new potatoes we have are so tasty! I have been happily munching potatoes with butter and basil out of my porch pots. We have seen a bit of broccoli and cauliflower make an appearance, and the local beet bunches with greens are incredibly vibrant. The local parsley, kale, sage, and garlic scapes are still making an appearance and getting better all the time. I had hoped to bring in some cilantro from my garden, but it is bolting too quickly now, and I have to harvest for canning salsa later. The chard we receive takes a hit in our store cooler due to the intensity of the refrigeration. The cooler has kept the store really cool too this year. I have heard people starting to talk of summer fruit, including tomatoes - and I will keep you posted.
Time to eat salad for dinner.
