Growing Food in the City
"Growing Food in the City" is offered in Burnaby (starting March 3), Victoria (starting March 3), and Duncan (starting March 3)
The course consists of 20 three-hour sessions - spanning the entire growing season. What an opportunity to develop your gardening skills under the mentorship of experienced organic food gardeners!
Here are some of the things you will learn - using essential organic gardening and permaculture techniques:
Create and maintain healthy soil, which in turn can grow nutritious food
Analyze and optimize the growing conditions in your garden
Creatively collect, use and preserve water for optimal garden health
Use holistic solutions for plant health problems (“pests” and “diseases”)
Select, plant, maintain, harvest a large variety of food plants for year-round enjoyment
Propagate plants
Store your harvest
Save your own seeds
In addition, students have access to Gaia College's famous on-line resource for a whole year, for hours of self-directed learning.
Why should you take this course?
Organically grown food is more nutritious
By growing your own food you can be sure that it contains no pesticides and other environmental toxins
Food you grow yourself tastes just so much better!
And let's not forget the joy of working in the garden, getting a bit of exercise, and feeling a real sense of accomplishment.
Can growing your own food really make a difference?
In some countries (Cuba, Russia), 80% and more of the vegetables consumed are grown by the urban population. That's big chunk out of the food budget, and a significant step towards greater independence from political and economic events beyond your control - at least there's food on the table.
